Visual measuring instruments started with the shadowgraph and has developed into today's optical comparators and imaging systems.
The optical comparators still rely on edge detection and look at the shape of edges or measure the distances between two edges.
The imaging systems uses a camera to look at a part. It can look and measure edges, but it can also look at surface features. It can measure height and shapes of objects not located near an edge.
