The labels are pressure sensitive on rolls. This makes the transfer from a roll the package easy with very positive and precise alignment. The printing of labels on the labeling machine is done by printers that are produced by companies that specialize in manufacturing printers and that further the printing technology.

The transfer of the label to the package can take several forms. As the roll providing the label is pulled around a small shaft, the label starts to peel itself from the carrying tape. The label can then be tamped unto the container or it can be blown with a burst of air onto the package. The later method is used for delicate or soft packages. Different manufacturers will have their own versions and combinations of these two methods.

RFID label applicators will print and read the labels. The label applicators can be manual or semi automatic. The automatic systems can be in-line or rotary. The biggest difference between a regular and an RFID applicator is the level of technology of the label printer/reader
