The simplest labeling unit is a Print and Apply Applicator which can be mounted on a conveyor to be part of a labeling/packaging system. The majority of the models use pressure sensitive tape. It removes labels fast and clean from the web and it does not need the glue application hardware.
The shape of the container and the location & size of the label are critical parameters. The most common container shape is round, with labels on one side, front & back, or wrapped around the container.
The second most common containers are cases, cartons, and pallets. These have flat surfaces but may apply labels on more than one side or around a corner. This configuration can also apply labels to the top and bottom of containers.
Another application is flat cases and clam shells that wrap a label from the under side to the top surface.
The fourth container shape is soft bags.
The speed of an applicator is measured in inches per minute. The printer quality is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Many print & apply manufacturers use printers made by printer specialists. The most recognized printer manufacturers are: Zebra, Sato, Datamax and Avery Dennison.
